Chelmsford Fairtrade Town Campaign

Our Third Application for Fairtrade Town Status

Goal 1: Local council passes a resolution supporting Fairtrade, and agrees to serve Fairtrade coffee and tea at its meetings and in its offices and canteens.

This was achieved on 12 May 2004.  A copy of the Minutes of the Chelmsford Borough Council for 12 May and the recommendations from the Corporate Policy Board and Standards Committee have been sent to you in our former applications. You have also had a copy of the Corporate Board’s meeting of 18 March 2004.

The Council’s website has pages on “How to do business with the Council” http://www.chelmsfordbc.gov.uk/procure/index.htm

Within these pages it is stated:

“The Council is committed to the principles of fair trade and in appropriate circumstances promotes those principles to its suppliers.”

The Council, working with the Fairtrade Town Campaign, has updated its text that promotes Fairtrade. There is also a link to our website. We have had meetings with the Borough Council to make arrangements for Fairtrade Fortnight and to promote Fairtrade. Copies of our minutes are sent to Councillor Wilson who is our contact within the Council. Needless to say we are delighted with our relationship with the Council.

Goal 2: A range of (at least two) Fairtrade products are readily available in the area’s shops and local cafés/catering establishments.

Aim to include a Flagship Employer:

In our view, Chelmsford Star Co-operative Society has to be seen as a Flagship employer within our Community. The Society was established in 1867 and has 550 employees all of whom receive Fairtrade tea and coffee for their breaks. Chelmsford Star has sixteen outlets in the Borough covering food, funerals and a department store. The Society has an extensive range of posters and stickers promoting Fairtrade. It also promotes Fairtrade to its staff through Co-operative News, and the activities of Chelmsford Fairtrade Town Campaign through its newsletter. In December 2006 the Society held a Fairtrade Tasting in Springfield – the prize being a Fairtrade Xmas Hamper. The Society, in conjunction with the Fairtrade Group, organised a School Fairtrade Competition, donated the prizes and certificates, and held a Fairtrade Evening. In our view, Chelmsford Star is widely acknowledged as the leading Fairtrade retailer in the town.

Goal 4: Attract media coverage and popular support for the campaign.

Date achieved: See the attached press cuttings for dates.

Since we were established positive media coverage has been central to our campaign. We have promoted Fairtrade through letters/ press releases to the four local newspapers and one Regional newspaper in order to publicise our events and stimulate interest. The local papers are: Essex Chronicle, Chelmsford Weekly News, Yellow Advertiser and The Enquirer. We have also used local radio stations to promote Fairtrade and reports of all our meetings have been published in the Essex Chronicle’s Community News. We have encouraged other Fairtrade Groups to mention Fairtrade in their own press reports. Through our contacts within the co-operative movement we have been able to place pictures and copy in Co-op News. It is also important to note that many of the articles have been published as a result of the excellent relationship we have developed with local journalists.

Goal 5:  A local Fairtrade Steering Group is convened to ensure continued commitment to its Fairtrade Town status.

Date achieved: 29 May 2003

Details of all our activities can be seen in the attached Annual Report.

Approximately 90 supporters have been kept advised of activities by email. We have a website discussion forum at http://chelmsfordfairtrade.org.uk/
